Match Review: Barcelona Destroy Osasuna 8-0!

After all the disappointment of FC Barcelona’s last two games, the naysayers who said it signaled the end of an era, and 2-2 becoming the most hated scoreline known to culés everywhere, we won. Not just won, we dominated Osasuna 8-0, achieving our beloved manita scoreline after just the first half. There were goals galore, records reached, and one giant collective sigh of relief. This era is far from being over.

With injuries still plaguing Barcelona, including those of key players Gerard Piqué and Andrés Iniesta, the starting lineup seemed to be a point of contention. However, Guardiola fielded a solid XI that proved how well our power bench can gel with starters. Victor Valdés, Dani Alves, Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano, Éric Abidal, Xavi Hernández, Thiago Alcântara, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fàbregas, David Villa, and Lionel Messi all began the game on the pitch.

Yet again, it didn’t take long for Barça to score their first goal. After a total of 4 minutes and 15 seconds, Messi scored his first goal of the evening when he tapped in a cross Alves headed in after a long ball from Busquets. Their next goal followed not even 10 minutes later when Messi chipped a great assist over the defense for Cesc to finish off with a left foot volley. That was Cesc’s third goal in three starts in La Liga.

At the end of the 1st half, FC Barcelona already led five goals to nil and controlled possession 85% to Osasuna’s meager 15%. This alone was enough to silence all critics, but Barcelona wanted more, and indeed, they got it.

Second half substitutions consisted of Adriano Correia coming on for Abidal and Álvaro Cejudo on for Jukka Raitala. Captain Puyol also came off shortly after the start in favor of Maxwell. In the 47th minute, Raúl García was yellow carded for a bad tackle on Busquets and then shortly after Messi rocked the crossbar looking for his hat trick. Finally, Xavi was able to make it 6-0 in the 57th minute when his long chip over the goalie found netting after an assist from Messi. With his job done, Xavi was soon subbed off for the return of Ibrahim Afellay. Raúl Garcia also came off for Osasuna and was replaced by Ibrahima Baldé.

FC Barcelona walked away eight goals up with a clean sheet and a new outlook on the season. After seeing yet another display of mastery by FC Barcelona, I can’t wait to see them play again on Wednesday against Valencia CF. A game like this proves that no matter how many hard times our team experiences, we should never lose faith, because in the end, they could never disappoint.
